The Valtellina Superiore Valgella "Carteria" from the Fay winery is a fresh, well-structured red wine produced from a single vineyard, Carterìa, which extends over approximately 3 hectares in the Valgella subzone of Valtellina. The terraced vineyards, located at an altitude of 500 meters and above, are extremely difficult to cultivate, which is why this viticulture is sometimes described as heroic. The extreme altitude of this area and the marked temperature variations between day and night characterize these wines, giving them great elegance and finesse. The Valgella "Carteria" is a Valtellina Superiore made from pure Nebbiolo grapes, from south-facing vines trained using the Guyot system on silty-sandy soils derived from flaked granite formations. The Sandro Fay winery is located in San Giacomo di Teglio, east of the city of Sondrio, and comprises 14 hectares, all located in the Valgella. Fay's "Carteria" Valtellina Superiore Riserva Valgella is produced with grapes harvested by hand in late October. Carefully selected, they are then destemmed and crushed upon arrival at the cellar. The winemaking process continues with alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks for approximately 14 days, with maceration on the skins for 6 days. The wine is then transferred partly into 30-hectoliter barrels and partly into 500-liter oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation takes place. It then ages for at least 12 months before being bottled. The wine displays an intense ruby red color with orange highlights. On the nose, it offers enveloping aromas of red fruits, including cherry and raspberry, dark berries, floral notes of violet, and spicy hints of clove and licorice. On the palate, it displays great depth and complexity, enveloping and elegant with silky tannins and crisp acidity. The finish is long and flavorful.
